The SPECTRO MS employs a double focusing sector field mass spectrometer with a Mattauch-Herzog design. This consists of an entrance slit, an electrostatic analyzer, an energy slit and a magnetic field.
In practice, this design offers a decisive advantage: The magnetic field focuses all of the ions, separated by atomic weight, onto the same surface plane – without having to adjust the voltage of the analyzer or the strength of the magnetic field.
In this way, the mass spectrometer manages to meet the conditions required for the use of the state-of-the-art chip detector – and for the fully simultaneous recording of all element contents.
