Analysis of High Purity Graphite Using ED-XRF

Depending on its purity, graphite is used for many applications for refractories, batteries, steelmaking, expanded graphite, brake linings, foundry facings and lubricants.

An increasing demand especially is seen by its use in battery manufacturing as graphite is used to construct the anode of all major battery technologies. The lithium-ion battery utilizes roughly twice the amount of graphite than lithium carbonate.

A higher amount of impurities in graphite comes from its natural resources, therefore a higher interest is to determine the larger concentrations like those from Al2O3, SiO2, CaO, Fe2O3 but also of S in the base material. Other oxides and elements can be determined simultaneously.

This report describes a quick and economic alternative approach to conduct elemental analysis of graphite with a purity of > 99 % using energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (ED-XRF) spectrometry in combination with the simple and easy sample preparation of a pressed pellet.
